The three recurrence arrays are read CONJUNCTIVELY by
AlternateScheduleSelector.GetScheduleForDate, so an empty set matches no date.
`?? []` on an omitted array therefore returned HTTP 200 while storing an
alternate-schedule or template item that could never apply, silently -- while the
read side (#823) already read a NULL column as the All*() sets.
Absent and explicitly-empty are two different requests and get two answers:
ABSENT (missing, or explicit null) normalizes to AlternateScheduleSelector.All*(),
the same symbols the read side substitutes; EXPLICIT [] is rejected with a 422
naming the consequence, via RecurrenceSetBounds called from both replace handlers.
The rejection lives in the handlers, not the controller, because
api.ffmpeg-profile-numeric-bounds' "accept an UNCHANGED bad value" rule binds
hardest here: both PUT paths are whole-list replaces, so rejecting a pre-existing
empty set would make every OTHER item in the list uneditable. That comparison
needs the stored row. The validated set is derived from `incoming`, so the
highest-Index catch-all -- whose recurrence the handler discards -- is excluded by
construction.
Verified: full ErsatzTV.Tests suite green; three mutation proofs with disjoint
reddened sets; live-E2E against a real instance confirmed an OMITTED property
round-trips as unrestricted (the Newtonsoft missing-property chain unit tests
cannot reach), an explicit [] returns the 422, and [] on the catch-all is accepted.
Cross-family cold review BLOCKED the first implementation with 3 findings, all real
and all fixed; re-review returned MERGEABLE.
Follow-up #894 filed: the SPA can still build the empty state the server rejects.

CI's Formatting job failed: 19 touched files carried a BOM, which .editorconfig
forbids (charset=utf-8). Pure encoding change — one byte per file, no semantic
diff (verified: every hunk is `-namespace` -> `+namespace`).
Self-inflicted. The patches that edited these legacy files wrote them back as
utf-8-sig to "preserve the existing style", but the #311 fix-as-you-touch gate
requires a file to be normalized when you touch it — that is the whole point of
scoping the gate to changed files instead of reformatting the ~2500 legacy BOM
files at once. dotnet format leaves the EF-generated Designer/snapshot files
alone as generated code, and its verify skips them the same way, so they stay as
ef emitted them.
Two corrections to what I believed going in:
- `dotnet format --include` does NOT no-op here. It reported `error CHARSET` for
each file and exit 2, reproducing CI exactly, and fixed them in place. The note
claiming otherwise is wrong for this invocation.
- My first BOM check reported all files clean. The od pattern was wrong; reading
the first three bytes directly found 19. A detector that can only say "ok" is
worse than no detector.
Core.Tests 565, ErsatzTV.Tests 1673, Architecture.Tests 5 — all passed. API
artifacts still in sync.

WeightedShuffle is implemented for classic schedule items only, and every other
engine mishandles an order it doesn't know *silently*: PlaylistEnumerator has no
default arm so the item is dropped from the playlist; BlockPlayoutBuilder filters
block items against an allow-list and `continue`s past the rest; YAML and Scripted
return None, which their callers' foreach reads as "no content". A weighted order
degrading to unweighted random or to nothing is the worst failure mode here,
because the output is supposed to look arbitrary — nobody would notice.
Rather than change those shipped fallbacks (a real defect class, but pre-existing
and wider than this feature — filed separately, non-goal here), this closes the
new exposure at the write path: ReplacePlaylistItems and ReplaceBlockItems reject
WeightedShuffle with an error naming where it is available. If it can't be
persisted where it isn't handled, the silent sites never see it.
Defence in depth for the two engines that address orders by name: YAML and
Scripted now log a warning when a parsed order falls through unhandled, so an
empty schedule explains itself. Enum.Parse accepts "weightedShuffle" the moment
the value exists, so the gate above can't cover them. EnumeratorForContent becomes
an instance method to reach the logger.
ProgramScheduleItemCommandBase lists WeightedShuffle explicitly as valid for multi
collections — it already passed by falling through the switch, and implicit-by-
omission is how this subsystem grew its silent paths.
Core.Tests: 558 passed, 0 failed.

Clears the still-live findings from #172 (verified against main; #2/#4/#7 and the
auth/search/Trakt tail were already deliberate-documented or fixed since 2026-07-07).
- Null/empty Name → 500 (10 create/replace handlers). Block/Template/DecoTemplate/Deco
Create+Replace/Update + UpdateFFmpegProfile did `request.Name.Length > 50` on a
client-nullable string → unhandled NullReferenceException → HTTP 500 (no global
exception filter). Now `string.IsNullOrWhiteSpace(request.Name) || .Length > 50` →
422; also rejects empty/whitespace names, matching the group-create handlers'
NotEmpty behavior. CreatePlaylist coalesces null→"" at the DTO so it was an
empty-name persist, not a 500; guarded the same way.
- ReplaceTemplateItems overlap validation iterated with an `item == otherItem`
record value-equality skip, so two exact-duplicate items were value-equal and
bypassed the intersection check (both persisted). Now index-based (i != j) so
duplicates register as a self-intersection and are rejected 422.
- Trimmed the unreachable 404 ProducesResponseType from POST /api/blocks/groups and
POST /api/templates/groups (a create has no parent lookup that can 404); v1.json
regenerated.
- Regression tests: all 10 name-guard paths + the duplicate-items path (19 cases).
- Docs: decisions.md entry + api-conventions.md §3b null-safe-validation bullet.

The shared optimistic-concurrency parser (ConcurrencyHeaders.ParseIfMatch) classified any
non-canonical/weak/list If-Match value as Malformed → 400. Per RFC 7232 §3.1 a syntactically
-valid entity-tag that simply doesn't strong-match must be 412; 400 is only for a genuine
grammar violation.
- Rewrite ParseIfMatch as a real RFC 7232 entity-tag/list parser: walks the comma-separated
1#entity-tag list, validates each [W/]DQUOTE *etagc DQUOTE member, and collects the strong
members whose opaque text is our canonical decimal. Weak / empty / non-canonical /
out-of-range tags are valid but contribute no version (→ empty set → 412); genuine grammar
violations (unquoted, SP-in-tag, unterminated, garbage) → 400.
- Reshape IfMatchCondition.ExpectedVersion : Option<int> → ExpectedVersions : Option<Seq<int>>
and VersionedAggregateExtensions.CheckVersion → set membership (any strong match proceeds;
empty set always 412). Threads through 10 replace/update commands + handlers + request
mappers + 9 controllers.
- No wire-contract change (400 + 412 already declared on every PUT; the field is header-derived
and internal — no DTO/route/response-type/OpenAPI change).
- Tests: ConcurrencyHeadersTests rewritten for the new classification (lists, weak, empty,
non-canonical → Version/empty-set; grammar violations → Malformed) + new
VersionedAggregateExtensionsTests for CheckVersion membership/empty-set/force-write.
- Docs: api-conventions.md §7a rewritten; decisions.md entry appended.

Independent adversarial review (cold fork + Codex) of the first cut converged
on one real miss and two boundaries to document.
- **ErasePlayoutHistoryHandler** (HIGH, both reviewers): modifies Playout ROOT
scalars (Seed/Anchor/OnDemandCheckpoint) *without* bumping Version, inside an
explicit transaction with no try/catch, so it 500s on a concurrent bump —
reachable via POST /api/playouts/{id}/erase-items-and-history. My first sweep
filtered on "Version-bumpers + deletes"; the true exposure surface is "any
handler leaving a versioned root Modified/Deleted", so this slipped through.
Now routes through SaveChangesForcingVersion (+ a non-vacuous through-handler
test that exercises the explicit-transaction path). Re-swept with the correct
filter: ErasePlayoutItems (AsNoTracking + ExecuteDelete children only) and
ResetAllPlayouts (read-only + enqueue) are NOT exposed.
- **Background build/time-shift Playout-scalar writers** (BuildPlayout via
PlayoutBuilder, PlayoutTimeShifter): token-guarded too, but intentionally left
on plain save — they already catch (build-failure, not 500), and force-writing
would persist output built from stale config (the concurrent config bump already
enqueues a rebuild). Documented as a deliberate boundary, not a gap.
- **Item-add index collision** under force-write: documented as an accepted
Phase-1 effect (non-corrupting, self-correcting; reload-recompute refinement
is a #197 candidate).
Also corrects the docs' "every Version bumper" framing to the true filter and the
test docstring's over-broad non-vacuity claim. Full ErsatzTV.Tests green (1483).

Activating #253's `Version` as an `IsConcurrencyToken` made EF guard every
UPDATE *and DELETE* of a versioned root with `WHERE Version=@orig`, so any
writer outside the If-Match contract that saves via plain `SaveChangesAsync`
throws an unhandled `DbUpdateConcurrencyException`->500 when a replace-all
editor bumps the row in its narrow load->save window (ordinary two-tab UI).
A completeness sweep (grep every `Version` bumper + every root delete, not
just the handlers PR3's close note named) found 17 exposed writers, all now
routed through `ConcurrencyExtensions.SaveChangesForcingVersion` (Phase-1
force-write: adopt the stored token and retry; rethrow only on genuine
row-deletion):
- 9 versioned-root delete handlers (a delete has no ETag to rotate -> force
only, no bump)
- UpdateProgramScheduleHandler (bumps then saved plainly - the ProgramSchedule
case PR3 only suspected; its post-commit query/enqueue also moved to
CancellationToken.None per section 7b)
- 7 item add/remove bumpers PR2 left on plain save:
Add/DeleteProgramScheduleItem + Add{Items,Movie,Show,Season,Episode}ToPlaylist
Force-write (not 412) is correct: these endpoints take no If-Match, so an
unconditional delete/edit should win. No API contract change (no new response
codes) -> no OpenAPI regen.
Still deferred to #197 (cross-editor ETag rotation only, not a 500): the
non-bumping config siblings + the scanner-shared Add*ToCollection family.
Tests: RootWriterForceVersionTests races a bump *through the handler* via a
pre-tracked context (non-vacuous - reverting a handler to plain save fails the
test, verified) for the Option-delete / Either-delete / bump+update shapes,
plus the genuine-conflict rethrow branch and an explicit negative control
proving the plain-save path throws. Full ErsatzTV.Tests green (1482).
Also strips a pre-existing UTF-8 BOM from the touched handlers to satisfy the
.editorconfig `charset=utf-8` rule the pre-commit format hook enforces.

Wire the frozen ETag/If-Match/412 recipe (Block reference implementation)
onto the Template and DecoTemplate aggregates:
- ReplaceTemplateItems / ReplaceDecoTemplateItems commands gain
Option<int> ExpectedVersion; ToCommand() on the request DTOs threads it
through from If-Match.
- Handlers introduce the version check as a standalone Either after
validation (never via Apply), bump Version unconditionally before
saving, and persist through SaveChangesWithConcurrencyGuard so a losing
writer maps to 412 instead of 500. DecoTemplate's post-commit playout
Reset enqueue now only runs after a successful save.
- TemplateViewModel / DecoTemplateViewModel carry Version (header-only,
not echoed in the response body), populated in Mapper.
- TemplateController / DecoTemplateController: GET items emits a strong
ETag of the root's version; PUT parses If-Match (400 on malformed),
threads the expected version into the command, and returns the new
ETag from the refreshed root on success. Both PUT actions now use the
handler's returned item list directly instead of re-querying items.
- SPA: templates.ts / decoTemplates.ts gain getXItemsWithMeta and an
If-Match-aware replaceX; TemplateEditor / DecoTemplateEditor hold the
ETag in a ref, read items-with-meta first on load, and open a
"changed elsewhere" ConfirmDialog on a 412 instead of navigating away.
Tests: new ReplaceTemplateItemsHandlerConcurrencyTests /
ReplaceDecoTemplateItemsHandlerConcurrencyTests mirror the Block
concurrency contract tests (stale/matching/absent If-Match, no-op bump,

Adds the shared optimistic-concurrency contract so a stale second tab can no longer
silently overwrite a fresher edit. PR1 lands the infra + the Block reference aggregate;
PRs 2–4 fan the same recipe across the other 8 roots (design: #253#issuecomment-8472).
Contract
- `IVersionedAggregate` (`int Version`) on all 9 replace-all roots (ProgramSchedule,
Block, Template, DecoTemplate, Playlist, Collection, Playout, MultiCollection,
RerunCollection), EF-mapped `.IsConcurrencyToken()`; one dual-provider migration
`AddAggregateVersions` (nullable:false, default 0).
- Strong `ETag` of `Version` on the aggregate GET; `If-Match` on the PUT; mismatch →
412 (distinct from the §3a 409 build-lock guard). Successful PUT returns the new ETag.
- `PreconditionFailedError : BaseError` → 412 in `ApiResults.ToErrorResult`;
`ConcurrencyHeaders.ParseIfMatch/SetETag`; malformed If-Match → 400; `*`/absent =
Phase-1 force-write.
Block reference wiring
- Handler: standalone `Either` via `CheckVersion` AFTER validation (never through
`Apply`, which Join()-flattens the subtype to 422), unconditional `Version++`,
`SaveChangesWithConcurrencyGuard` backstop (DbUpdateConcurrencyException → 412).
- `BlockViewModel.Version` (header-only, not echoed in the body); controller sets the
ETag on GET items and on the successful PUT.
- SPA: `client.requestWithMeta` seam; `blocks.getBlockItemsWithMeta` + `replaceBlock`
If-Match/ETag round-trip; `BlockEditor` holds the ETag, sends If-Match, and on 412
opens a blocking "changed elsewhere — reload" dialog.
Tests
- Handler contract tests: stale-If-Match → 412 (no mutation), matching/absent → success
+ bump, no-op save still bumps, and a two-context racing save → 412; proven
non-vacuous (drop `.IsConcurrencyToken()` → the race test fails).
- Controller tests: malformed If-Match → 400, If-Match threaded to the command, ETag on
GET/PUT, 412 passthrough. SPA: requestWithMeta ETag, replaceBlock If-Match, 412 dialog.

Independent Codex review of the fix diff surfaced two real findings the fork pass missed:
- Medium: the #251 affected-playout QUERIES in ReplaceDecoTemplateItemsHandler and
UpdateDecoHandler still ran on the request `cancellationToken`, so a cancellation
landing after SaveChanges committed but before those queries executed would throw
before the CancellationToken.None enqueue — the edit committed but no playout Reset,
re-opening the stale-content bug in that window. Run the entire post-commit
invalidation (queries + enqueue) on CancellationToken.None so the side effect can't
be half-aborted once the data has changed.
- Low: UpdateDefaultDecoHandler enqueued a Reset for request.PlayoutId even when
ExecuteUpdateAsync matched 0 rows (nonexistent playout), creating a background build
request for an id that isn't there. Guard the enqueue on rows-updated > 0 so the
enqueued set equals the affected set. Added a regression test.
Also corrected the ReplaceProgramScheduleItemsHandler comments: the schedule-item
hierarchy is TPT (table-per-type), not TPH — the SetValues reconcile is safe either way
(same-runtime-type guard; no discriminator to corrupt), Codex confirmed.

#252: ReplaceProgramScheduleItems deleted and re-inserted every item on every
save (even a no-op PUT-back), and PlayoutScheduleItemFillGroupIndex.ProgramScheduleItemId
is OnDelete(Cascade) — so every schedule save silently wiped persisted
fill-group/shuffle enumerator progression for all playouts using the schedule.
Switch to a positional in-place reconcile: for a same-typed slot, copy scalars via
CurrentValues.SetValues (BuildItem stays the single source of item construction, so
no field is dropped) and rebuild the watermark/graphics join rows, keeping the item
id — and with it the fill-group index. Subtype change / surplus falls back to
delete+insert for that slot only. The request DTO carries no stable item id, so
position is the only key here; true content-aware stable identity is deferred to the
shared concurrency/round-trip contract in #253.
#251: deco / deco-template CONTENT edits (and default-deco assignment) only take
effect on a playout Reset build — deco/break/default-filler content is applied during
Reset, a Continue keeps the frozen filler items, and BlockKey change-detection has no
deco dimension to self-heal. The editors enqueued nothing (a commented-out TODO in
ReplaceDecoTemplateItemsHandler), so filler/break content stayed stale indefinitely
until a manual Reset. Enqueue BuildPlayout(Reset) for exactly the affected playouts:
- ReplaceDecoTemplateItemsHandler: playouts via PlayoutTemplate.DecoTemplateId
- UpdateDecoHandler: playouts via Playout.DecoId and via deco-template items
- UpdateDefaultDecoHandler: the reassigned playout (adjacent same-class fix)
Post-commit enqueues use CancellationToken.None (audit #22 policy).
Tests: DecoInvalidationTests + ReplaceProgramScheduleItemsReconcileTests, each proven
non-vacuous against a negative control (inverted the primitive, verified 0 CS errors so
the --no-build run used a fresh dll). Full ErsatzTV.Tests suite green (1067).

Adds DecoTemplateController mirroring TemplateController: CRUD for deco
template groups, deco templates (flat list + by-id), item listing, and a
full-replace PUT for a deco template's item list.
Hardening (deviation from a literal port of the existing handlers, matching
the #144 S2 fix for ReplaceTemplateItemsHandler):
- CreateDecoTemplateHandler now validates DecoTemplateGroupId exists before
insert (previously a bad id hit the FK constraint at SaveChanges and
surfaced as a 500; now a 422).
- ReplaceDecoTemplateItemsHandler now rejects invalid items (unknown DecoId,
StartTime >= EndTime unless EndTime is the end-of-day sentinel 00:00:00,
or overlapping ranges) with a 422 instead of silently dropping/persisting
them - the same silent-drop/silent-overlap bug class already fixed for
templates.
Response DTOs serialize the raw item TimeSpans (via .TimeOfDay), so an
end-of-day item still round-trips as StartTime=22:00:00/EndTime=00:00:00
regardless of the ViewModel's day-wrapping DateTime representation.
UpdateDecoHandler copied every break-content field except MediaItemId,
so TelevisionShow/Season/Artist break content validated then persisted
with a null MediaItemId (upstream bug surfaced by the new REST API).

artist/multi-collection search picker wrappers, a PlaylistController for the
break-content playlist cascade, and PUT /api/playouts/{id}/deco. Fixes the
CreateDecoHandler missing deco-group existence check (FK 500 -> 422), matching
the CreateBlock/CreateTemplate precedent. ReplaceDecoRequest.ToCommand rejects
Merge on the non-mergeable sections (422).

PUT /api/templates/{id} with an unknown blockId threw KeyNotFoundException
(HTTP 500) because the dictionary indexer assumed every referenced block
had been loaded. Validate all blockIds exist before building the overlap
list and return a 422 with "[BlockId] {id} does not exist." on failure,
matching ReplaceBlockItemsHandler's message convention.
Also reject items whose start time + block duration crosses midnight
(> 24:00). Previously these were silently accepted by PUT, then dropped
by GetTemplateItemsHandler's end-of-day filter on every subsequent GET,
so a saved item would vanish and be deleted on the next save.
Adds TemplateController mirroring BlockController: groups CRUD, template
CRUD, item replace (PUT full-replace via ReplaceTemplateItems), and a
copy endpoint. Also wires the missing POST /api/blocks/{id}/copy since
CopyBlock's CQRS shape is directly analogous to CopyTemplate.
Fixes CreateTemplateHandler to validate the target template group exists
before insert (previously an unhandled FK violation -> 500), matching the
CreateBlockHandler fix (1e34e00e) for the same class of bug.
New DTOs in ErsatzTV.Core/Api/Scheduling; TimeSpan start times serialize
the same way as PlayoutResponseModel.DailyRebuildTime.

POST /api/blocks with a nonexistent blockGroupId returned an
unhandled DbUpdateException (HTTP 500) because CreateBlockHandler
never checked the referenced block group before inserting, letting
the SQLite FK constraint raise. Add a BaseError validation (422),
matching the "does not exist" precedent already used elsewhere.
